Thank you for your interest in substitute teaching for the Chester County Intermediate Unit. The CCIU provides substitute teachers, substitute nurses and substitute instructional assistants for the following schools and districts: Coatesville Area School District, Owen J. Roberts School District, West Chester Area School District, Graystone Academy Charter School, and the Montgomery School, as well as all CCIU schools and classrooms.
We welcome certified professional applicants to apply throughout the year for consideration. Applicants are processed in the order in which they are received. This process typically takes two to ten weeks, so please plan the timing of your application accordingly.
You will be contacted by E-mail when your application has been fully processed. If you do not list an e-mail address on your application, then you will be contacted by telephone.
In order to be considered for a position, please review the list of application materials below, and submit your materials in ONE packet (all materials together).
You will receive a postcard in the mail acknowledging the receipt of your materials. This postcard will be generated within one to three business days after receiving your materials and sent to you in the mail.
The pay range for substitute teaching is $85-$110 per diem, based on the school district in which you work. There are no benefits associated with this position.
Materials we will need for substitute teaching (please only send the following):
- PA Standard Teaching Application. Make sure you have both email addresses and telephone numbers listed for all FOUR of your required references on page 3. The first question on page 1 of the application asks POSITION DESIRED: insert Substitute Teaching.
- Copy of your Child Abuse Clearance (must be within the past year)
- Copy of your Criminal Clearance (must be within the past year)
- Copy of your Pennsylvania certification
- Your FBI Fingerprint Card
- Copies of letters of recommendation (optional)

TEACHER TEMPS PROGRAM
The Chester County Teacher Temp Program began January 1999 to provide the Chester County Schools with an additional pool of substitute teachers. An individual who is not a certified teacher but possess, at a minimum, a bachelors degree is eligible to enroll in the program. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has allowed school districts and intermediate units to apply for emergency certification as per diem substitutes for qualified applicants.
The applicant must also complete a three-day training session provided by Chester County Intermediate Unit. Generally, training sessions are held once a month, August through January. The trainings start at 8:00 AM until 3:30 PM each day. A $52.50 registration fee is charged to attend the training. Also, there is a $15.75 fee (cashiers check or money order) for processing the Emergency Certification.
In addition to completing the registration packet, an individual will need to complete the PA Standard Teaching Application, and a General Application for PA Certificate Form PDE 338 G. Please follow the directions in the registration packet, NOTE the 3 pages of instructions that follow the form. In addition, the applicant is required to obtain a Pennsylvania child abuse clearance, and a Act 34 criminal clearance. A $10.00 application fee is required by the state for each clearance. You are also required to obtain a clearance from the FBI
Each training session is on a first come, first serve basis with attendance limited to a maximum of 25 trainees per session. Please submit your registration form early to ensure the training date of your choice.
