Speech/Language Program FAQ'S
When will Speech/Language therapy begin?
During most of September, I will be assessing new students to the school as well as screening the kindergarten children. I also assist in other kindergarten screenings throughout the county and may not always be in the building on my assigned days. Direct Speech and Language therapy will begin by the first week in October.
What will my child miss while at Speech/Language therapy?
I consult with the classroom teacher to find a time slot that does not interfere with major academic learning periods. I do not see children during recess or lunch and only pull out a child during "specials" with both parent's and teacher's permission.
How will I be informed of my child's progress?
Each student receives a Speech/Language folder which should be brought to school on his/her assigned Speech day. A Parent Communication form is in the pocket. I will provide monthly updates on this form as well as answer any questions that you may have submitted to me. Your child's Speech/Language homework is an indicator of what we are currently working on. In addition, I send out formal Update Reports at the end of the year. Parent-Teacher Conferences are also held at that time. You will only receive a midyear report if I have concerns about your child's progress. You may request a conference at any time. If you would like to observe a session, please call or send a note ahead of time as my schedule is sometimes altered by classroom/school/IU events.
What can I do at home to help my child?
Most weeks your child will have home practice in his/her Speech/Language folder. Reading aloud to your child with frequent stops to ask questions is highly recommended. Ask both factual and reasoning questions as well as for vocabulary definitions to provide both comprehension and expression practice. When your child reads to you, remind him/her to use his best speech before starting and set up a nonverbal signal (e.g., tugging your ear, raising a finger, etc.) to be used if reminders are necessary.
