Coatesville, Pa. - Students in the Health Occupations program at the Center for Arts & Technology Pickering Campus are giving up one Saturday night a month to provide respite to parents of children with autism. According to Health Occupations instructor Donna Dietrich, the students are participating in Parents' Night Out organized by the Chester County Autism Alliance as their community service project for their school’s chapter of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). To date students have volunteered 150 hours to the program.
“I was looking for a community service project for the students that was more than just raising money,” said Dietrich. “I called the Autism Alliance and they were just starting Parents’ Night Out. It was divine intervention.”
According to Dietrich, one Saturday night a month, her students volunteer (along with other members of the community) to baby sit children with autism and their siblings at the Brandywine YMCA so that the parents can have a night to themselves.
“The students have really built relationships with the children,” said Dietrich. “They look for specific children each time they go. About a week before the event, they start talking about seeing their child. It’s not just “I have to go do community service.” They look forward to it.”
It’s evident when talking to the students that this is more than a class requirement. Ask Danielle Polloway, an 11th grader from Phoenixville, about her student and her face lights up, she clasps her hands and brings them up to her heart.
“I usually watch Ryan,” said Danielle, flashing a million-kilowatt smile. “It’s so rewarding. They [the children with autism] give back to you what you give to them.”
According to Dietrich, the experience helps prepare her students for when they will be working in a health care setting.
“The students are learning to follow the chain of command and to follow direction from someone who has a better understanding of the situation and the needs of the child than they do.”
For Staci Kovach, who wants to go into pediatric care, the experience is invaluable.
“I love kids and I love helping people, so this is perfect for me,” said Staci. “Plus, I want to work in pediatrics and this gives me the experience working with kids. I’ve learned that each child is different. Some of the kids don’t talk and others are really rambunctious. You have to get to know each one separately.”
The students have also learned how it must be to care for a child with special needs.
“I have a lot of compassion for the parents now,” said Health Occupations student Meaghan Cavanagh. “They are really sweet kids and they are really good kids, but I see how difficult it is just to keep up with them for one night. It’s hard work. The families have it so much harder, they don’t have someone organizing the activities for them, and bringing in the pizza. They have to do it all themselves, all day, every day.”
Classmate Staci Kovach agreed: “Parent’s Night Out gives the parents a break and gives us the opportunity to see how the families live every day.”
Parents’ Night Out is organized by the Chester County Autism Alliance. The Brandywine YMCA donates their facilities free of charge.
The next Parents’ Night Out is scheduled for Saturday, June 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Brandywine YMCA in Coatesville. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Angela Conser at 484-237-5140.
