Who can take driver education through the Chester County Intermediate Unit?
Anyone who is a student under the age of 18 or still attending high school can attend.
What are the advantages of taking driver education?
There are many advantages. The first, and most important, is that the student will be educated in the safe operation of an automobile. In taking driver education, your child's chance of having a serious accident will be greatly reduced. Also, most insurance companies offer discounts to students who completed both parts of driver education. Call you own insurance company to verify its requirements.
Did you know?
Under the new Zero Tolerance Law, a minor will lose his/her license if there is ANY trace of alcohol in his/her system.**
What is classroom training?
The highway safety course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction. Students are instructed in a variety of safe driving skills included, but not limited to, vehicle handling techniques, trauma training, drunk driving, and understanding road signs. It is highly recommended that students be at least fifteen years old to take Highway Safety classes.
Did you know?
The instructor can administer the driving test to the student during the last half-hour of their driving lesson if they have completed classroom training and have had their permit for six months.
How will I know if my child got into the classroom session I requested?
We either e-mail you (if your e-mail address has been provided) or call you prior to the class to let you know the session your child has been assigned to attend.
What if my child must miss a class due to illness?
Students MUST attend all 30 hours of classroom instruction in order to receive certification. Of course, we realize that people get ill from time to time. Students who miss a class due to illness will be given written work in order to make up the class. If more than three hours are missed, the class time must be made up by attending another session. If more than six hours are missed, the entire course will have to be re-taken at your expense.
How does my child obtain a Learner's permit?
Have a medical qualification certificate filled out by your physician (found in the front of the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual.) Read and study the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual. Then go to the Pennsylvania Driver License Center where a vision test and PA Signs and Knowledge test will be given. Bring the form, proof of date of birth and identification to the test.
How do I register?
To register for a classroom session by phone with Visa or Mastercard, please call the Driver Education Department at 484-237-5189.
To register by mail, print the Driver Education brochure, complete the registration form and return it to CCIU.

GENERAL DRIVER EDUCATION INFORMATION
- Most insurance companies offer discounts to students who have taken both classroom and behind-the-wheel training.
- Parents are strongly encouraged to continuously monitor the driving practices of their teenagers, even after they are issued a license. Teenagers often become careless, reckless and over-confident within 12 months of receiving their license. In order to monitor careless driving habits that may have developed, parents are encouraged to have their teenager drive them to their destination occasionally.
- Upon completion of each part of driver education, students are issued a certificate stating that they have fulfilled the course requirements. These certificates can then be used to obtain a discounted auto insurance, if your insurance company offers one.
- If your child has taken both classroom and behind-the-wheel driver education and s/he is 17-1/2 years of age, and has had her/his license for one(1) year, s/he may be able to get a senior license. Just send us a notarized Junior-to-Senior License form (pick one up at school, or call us and we'll send you one) along with proof of course completion (copies of the certificates will do). We will sign the form verifying completion of the courses and send it to Harrisburg.
