Chester County Spelling Bee

The 2010 Chester County Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Chester County Intermediate Unit and is open to all students enrolled in a Chester County public, private, parochial or home school in grades five through eight and who have not reached their 15th birthday by September 1, 2009. Each school must register with the Scripps National Spelling Bee (www.spellingbee.com) and submit a $99 fee. The registration deadline is October 16, 2009. The late enrollment period begins October 17 and runs through December 18, 2009. All schools must be enrolled by December 18 to be eligible for participation in the 2010 program. All schools enrolling during the late enrollment period will be subject to a late enrollment fee of $75 per school. There will be no further extensions.

The Chester County Spelling Bee is a qualifying bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Participating Schools

Each participating school may send one student to the Chester County Spelling Bee who is in grades five, six, seven or eight and who has not reached his/her 15th birthday by September 1, 2009. The school has sole autonomy to determine the qualifying structure for its entrant in the Chester County Spelling Bee provided it follows the eligibility requirements stated above.

Homeschooled Students

Homeschooled students who live in Chester County may participate in the Chester County Spelling Bee through the Chester County Homeschool Association. To register or for more information, please e-mail William Walter or call 610-688-1722.

The 2009 Winners

The champion of the Chester County Spelling Bee will represent Chester County in the National Spelling Bee Competition held in Washington, DC, the week of May 24 through 30, 2009. The 2009 winners are:

1st Place - Paro Sen (Avon Grove Charter School)

2nd Place - Julia Johansson (St. Patrick School - Kennett)

3rd Place - Kayla Dickens (Fred S. Engle Middle School) Katie Helmich (J. R. Fugett Middle School)
