The Career Development Center is a center-based, pre-vocational program in life skills and learning support that provides learning experiences for students in a highly structured, staff-intensive environment.  Students with severe learning disabilities, physical handicaps, mild emotional disturbances and mild to moderate mental retardation can be successful in this pre-vocational program.

Basic academic, life and pre-vocational skills are taught in an integrated program for students, ages 14 to 21 years old.  Academic and pre-vocational skills are tailored to student abilities and interests as determined by an IEP team.  Emphasis is placed on developing functional skills ranging from basic survival and self-help skills to higher level reading and math skills related to the student's pre-vocational area.

  • Small engine repair
  • Automobile servicing      
  • CAD (Computer Assistive Design)

Each student's program follows the mandate of his/her IEP as designed to meet local district high school graduation requirements.  In addition to the academic and pre-vocational classes, students may participate in the following activities:

  • Adaptive & regular physical education   
  • Intramural sports
  • Adventure/character education
  • Electives may include:
  • Creative art        
  • Music     
  • Swimming          
  • Physical education
  • Chorus  
  • School volunteer programs        
  • Adventure education

The primary goal is to assist students in developing the necessary self-help skills, social skills, independent living skills, work habits and appropriate behavior to be successful in regular vocational programs and/or the world of work.

Related services not provided in the base cost but available on an as needed basis include:
