Thank you for your interest in substitute teaching for the Chester County Intermediate Unit. The CCIU provides substitute teachers, substitute nurses and substitute instructional assistants for the following schools and districts: Coatesville Area School DistrictCollegium Charter SchoolOwen J. Roberts School District, West Chester Area School Districtas well as all CCIU schools and classrooms.


Substitute Teaching Requirements for Employment

We welcome certified professional applicants to apply throughout the year for consideration.  This process typically takes two to ten weeks, so please plan the timing of your application accordingly. Please note, if you wish to be considered as a substitute instructional assistant, as well as a certified substitute teacher, you do not need to submit a separate substitute instructional assistant application. 
 
You will be contacted by e-mail when your application has been fully processed. If you are reapplying due to inactivity, you must wait until the following school year to apply.

Applicants who hold a teaching certification in a state other than Pennsylvania will be required to complete an online Emergency Permit through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (TIMS System) upon hire along with the submission of sealed college transcripts.
 
The pay range for substitute teaching is $85 - $113 per diem, based on the school district in which you work. There are no benefits associated with this position.

Teacher Temp Program

The Teacher Temp Training Session for the 2013-2014 School Year will be held on January 8, 9, and 10th.  Applicants must currently hold a Bachelor's Degree.

The Chester County Teacher Temp Program began January 1999 to provide the Chester County Schools with an additional pool of substitute teachers. An individual who is not a certified teacher but possesses, at a minimum, a bachelors degree is eligible to enroll in the program. The Pennsylvania Department of Education has allowed school districts and intermediate units to apply for emergency certification for qualified applicants as per diem substitutes.

Each training session is on a first come, first serve basis with attendance limited to a maximum of 40 trainees per session. An interview will precede your confirmation to the training.  
 
The applicant must complete a three day training session provided by the Chester County Intermediate Unit.  The trainings are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

A $150.00 registration fee is charged to attend the training. In the event you are not accepted into the program your check will be returned to you. There is also a $25.00 fee (cashiers check or money order made payable to the Chester County Intermediate Unit) for processing your Emergency Certification.

We will refund $75.00 of your $150.00 registration fee once you notify us in writing that you have completed five full days of substitute teaching.

Substitute School Nurse Requirements For Employment


Substitute school nurses must possess a current RN license or a School Nurse Certification. 
 
Applicants who do not hold a school nurse certification in Pennsylvania will be required to complete an online Emergency Permit through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (TIMS System) upon hire along with the submission of sealed college transcripts.

Substitute Instructional Assistant Requirements For Employment

Substitute instructional assistants employed by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) are utilized in CCIU programs as well as Kennett Consolidated School District only.  If you wish to be an instructional assistant for any other school district you must contact the district for their application process.  Substitute instructional assistants must have a high school diploma or GED. No further certification or education is required. Please note, if you have already submitted an application for substitute teaching, you do not need to complete the application for a substitute instructional assistant.

The pay rate is $83 per diem. There are no benefits associated with this position.
