The Animal Science and Technology program prepares students for successful employment in the small animal care industry and for post-secondary education. The program provides students with a working knowledge of the small animal industry. Students are instructed in the care, maintenance, and grooming of all common laboratory and pet animals. Students also receive instruction in working with and caring for horses and large farm animals.
Students receive a strong foundation in the life sciences with emphasis on biology, anatomy, physiology, diseases, reproduction, genetics, nutrition and surgical assisting. Emphasis on science is designed to prepare students for post-secondary education. Because of the emphasis on science and math, students considering this program should possess a strong academic foundation.
The course is graded on practical and “hands-on” activities as well as theory and classroom instruction. Students are introduced to the animal care industry via field trips, professional meetings, guest speakers and clinical and cooperative education job experiences. This course prepares students for entry-level positions in biomedical research, veterinary care, sales, retail business, animal breeding and training, and the military. Students may work toward the Lab Animal Care Certificate by PMI-Purina Mills, Inc. and the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Certificate by the American Association Laboratory Animal Science (available after one year of continuous, full-time employment in the field).
Many career opportunities exist for animal care technicians and veterinary assistants in private veterinary practices, biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic laboratories, sales, retail business and the military. Tech Prep articulation agreements for this program are available here.
