HVAC/Refrigeration Technology program travels to industry expo

Flushing, New York - The Chester County Technical College High School’s HVAC/RefrigerationTechnologies HVAC/R Technology tripprogram took advantage of the unique learning opportunity oftraveling to an industry trade show in New York. The students, chaperones, andprogram instructor, Bart Heagy, traveled to Flushing, New York, for the ABCOTrade Expo, which is the country’s largest independent HVAC/Refrigeration tradeshow.

“The expo offered the students with the opportune situationto demonstrate the knowledge that they have gained while enrolled in the program,making it a great example of fostering an understanding of content,” saidHeagy. “Through dialogue between the students and vendors, I was able towitness firsthand their abilities and interests.”

Students prepared for the expo with classroom discussionsthat consisted of what they hoped to see, and by developing lists of questionsto ask the vendors, promoting critical and creative thinking in the subjectareas.

“Being at the expo really showed how careers in the fieldcan vary,” said Thomas Bradley, 11th grade student in the programfrom Avon Grove High School. “There are so many options from sales all the wayto hands-on work with equipment.”

In addition to learning career options, students were ableto speak with industry professionals at any of the 186 vendor booths as well assee equipment they otherwise might not have been able to experience.

“Being at the expo was a great learning experience,” saidJustin Neuhof, 11th grade student from Avon Grove High School. “Itwas especially great to be able to see the latest technology in the industryand see firsthand the products being used.”

The day trip was offered to students at no cost thanks todonations from Johnstone Supply, Summers & Zim’s, Inc., and T.C. DavisHeating & Cooling.

“The entireexperience was beneficial to everyone involved; sometimes the most influentiallessons are when the students and instructor gain knowledge at the same time,” added Heagy.
