  • Teaching Multilingual Learners in ELD & Disciplinary Classrooms

Facilitated by Dr. Amy J. Heineke
    Loyola University Chicago

By applying a language lens in their practice, teachers can nurture language development and provide access to content learning. In this session, teachers will analyze disciplinary curriculum to pinpoint language demands for students at varying levels of language proficiency.

Dr. Amy Heineke’s career began as a classroom teacher in Phoenix, Arizona, where she worked with primarily Mexican immigrant students labeled as English learners. Dr. Heineke has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and six books, including a text co-authored with Jay McTighe entitled Using Understanding by Design in the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Classroom. She works with educators across the United States and Latin America to build professional capacity to enhance the educational opportunities and outcomes of multilingual learners.
