Pre-Vocational Programs

  • This program provides students with instruction in plant identification, flower arranging, basic greenhouse operation, garden maintenance, and retail and wholesale marketing. Landscape Gardening includes instruction and hands-on training in growing and maintaining trees and shrubs, annual flowers and vegetable plants. Students also learn the use of the various types of tools and equipment, and structures unique to horticulture and landscaping. Students also receive instruction in landscape design and construction.

    Exploration of and emphasis on:

    Students in Horticulture and Landscape Gardening study the Pathways through Horticulture curriculum developed by the Pennsylvania Agriculture Department and the Pennsylvania Nurserymen’s Association. Two concentrations of study are offered: horticulture and landscape gardening. Students receive an introduction to both fields of study before choosing their major. In both areas, students learn the use of various tools, equipment, and the structures unique to horticulture and landscaping. The Horticulture program provides students with instruction in plant identification, flower arranging, basic greenhouse operations, garden maintenance, retail and wholesale marketing.

    The Landscape Gardening program includes instruction and hands-on training in growing and maintaining trees and shrubs, annual flowers and vegetable plants. Students also receive instruction in landscape design and construction.

Employment Opportunities

  • Students in the program are prepared for employment in nurseries, greenhouses, flower shops, landscape firms, and retail stores with floral and garden departments.
