This year's Kids Voting Kick-off Ceremony will be held virtually. The purpose of this event is to educate students, specifically residing in Chester County, about voting in general. As an affiliate of Kids Voting USA, we want to take the mystery out of voting and focus on the right to vote, as well as the actual voting process. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m and will be streamed on YouTube for students, teachers and parents. The ceremony will feature Chester County commissioners and other elected officials, along with representatives affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Kids Voting is a national network of community-based affiliates that partner with schools and election officials to offer students in Kindergarten through high school a wide range of opportunities for civic learning. It is the combination of classroom instruction, family dialogue and an authentic voting experience that makes Kids Voting USA a powerful strategy for achieving long-term change in voting behavior. Kids Voting teaches children about the value of voting as well as the requirements and procedures for voting and develops critical thinking and decision-making skills. Recent research has demonstrated that the skills and habits your child will acquire during the program are enduring and significant.
As part of the project, the students will study the candidates and issues of this campaign. Parents are encouraged to spend some time with their children discussing the candidates and issues and gathering information from television, newspapers, and magazines. Their involvement will enhance their child’s participation in Kids Voting. After classroom preparation, students take part in a voting experience using a ballot that mirrors that of the adults with the same candidates and issues. This “real life” practice dispels the mysteries of the voting process and reinforces the knowledge and skills gained through Kids Voting classroom activities.
