MTSS | Building Belonging in Tiered Systems Change

Belonging is the feeling of being appreciated, validated, and treated fairly (Cobb & Krownapple, 2019). It is the goal of educational system frameworks to create climates and cultures in schools where learners of all ages are able to obtain a sense of belonging and connection. By dreaming out loud, we have the ability to create these spaces with the practices we employ to honor dignity and affirm those we serve. This keynote address will seek to empower participants to be change agents through the power of creating transformative educational spaces.

Specifically, it will provide strategies for embedding universal practices that foster belonging through academic, social-emotional, and behavioral systems. Key approaches include effective teaming, coaching, family engagement, culturally responsive instruction, and shared ownership.

Featured Speaker Dr. Andrea Kolb
Designing and Implementing Promising MTSS Programs for Multilingual Learners

The MTSS model can be particularly powerful in determining what kinds of supports are most appropriate for multilingual learners (MLs), who are frequently over- and under-identified for special education.

For this to work, educators must ensure that language acquisition and sociocultural factors are considered in all aspects of targeted instruction that is provided in all three tiers. In this session, we will explore critical considerations and common pitfalls in MTSS program design and instruction for MLs.
