The CCIU Special Education Certification Post-Baccalaureate Program is a two-year, online certification pathway for certified educators and individuals with a bachelor’s degree seeking to earn their PK–12 Special Education certification in Pennsylvania.

Designed as an alternative to traditional university programs, this asynchronous and self-paced option allows participants to build the skills and knowledge needed to serve students with disabilities while continuing to work in educational settings.
This 21-credit program blends 7 online courses, field experience, and a 12-week student teaching placement, aligning with the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s PK–12 Special Education Competencies. Whether you're a current educator or transitioning into the field, this pathway offers a flexible, affordable option for certification.

- Candidates have the option to take the courses toward certification only or for Alvernia University graduate credits
- Grad Credit pricing: Additional $575 per course
- Certification only: $8,000 (Covers all 7 courses, field experience, and student teaching seminar)

The CCIU Special Education Teacher Apprenticeship is a two-year, job-embedded certification program designed for educational assistants and paraprofessionals with a bachelor’s degree in any field. This program allows participants to continue working in their current school roles while earning their Instructional I Special Education PK–12 Certification in Pennsylvania.
Built on CCIU’s PDE-approved post-baccalaureate certification program, the 21-credit apprenticeship pathway blends 7 online courses, on-the-job training, structured mentorship, and student teaching to prepare candidates to meet the needs of diverse learners in special education classrooms.

Teacher Intern Pathway
Begin Your Role as a Special Education Teacher and Earn Your Certification While You Work!
You don’t have to choose between working and earning your certification in Special Education. CCIU’s Intern Pathway lets you do both.

Work full time as a Special Education teacher under a Pennsylvania Department of Education Instructional Intern Certificate while completing your PK–12 Instructional I Special Education Certification in just 10 months. With built-in mentorship, job-embedded learning, and flexible coursework, this program is designed to help you succeed both on the job and in the classroom.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the program, applicants must:

Hold a bachelor’s degree (any major) with a minimum 3.0 GPA
-
Be hired as a Special Education Teacher at CCIU or be referred by an affiliated district partner
-
Passing scores on the following tests (before the start of the school year):

Praxis 5511 – Fundamental Subjects: Content Knowledge

Praxis 5355 – Special Education: Foundational Knowledge
