Speech and Language

In the school-age program, the Speech/Language program provides specialized instruction as mandated on the student's individual education plan. Speech/language clinicians assist students in remediating or compensating for speech and language deficits that affect the student's educational process. Regular educators are provided with strategies for working with students with speech/language deficits.

In addition to speech/language support as specialized instruction, speech and language evaluations are available as a separate service and include the evaluation and a written report. Follow-up consultation and participation in special education program planning can also be provided.

Telepractice Service

Through telepractice, Therapy Connect creates connections between students and educators for speech/language and occupational therapy, hearing and vision support and mental health counseling. Therapy Connect supports students ages birth to 21 with mild to complex needs and is appropriate for a large majority of the students already receiving services.

Telepractice uses video conferencing platforms to create a connection between students and educators. From assessment to intervention to consultation, telepractice provides digital interactions that generate the same or better personal engagement as in-person sessions.

Deaf/Hearing Impaired Services

The CCIU offers numerous deaf/hearing impaired services to assist our students and families in accessing equitable resources and support. In addition to itinerant teachers providing 1:1 hearing support services, audiology services and consultants, we facilitate screenings, evaluations, trials, C-print services and referrals.

Age-appropriate evaluation of hearing abilities for all populations to determine if a hearing loss is present, as well as to gain information on the type and severity of the loss, educational implications and appropriate medical referrals if necessary. Testing is completed in the soundproof Audiology booth located at the intermediate unit.

Blind/Visually Impaired Support

The Itinerant Blind/Visually Impaired Support program provides specialized services and instruction for students, ages five through 21, whose skills allow them to function within a regular education setting. The level of intervention is determined by student need.

Teachers of the visually impaired provide regular educators with strategies for working with visually impaired students. Specialized instructional materials (large print and Braille) and high technology equipment are provided to the students as appropriate. Orientation and Mobility instruction is provided as a related service.

The Accessible Instructional Materials Center (AIM) is operated by the Vision Support Department. The primary goal of the AIM is to ensure the timely provision of adapted materials including print materials to students who have visual impairments.
