Email Scam Alert

It has come to our attention that there is an email claiming to be from the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), with an unsolicited offer of a job interview. The email is a scam and the interview is not real.  Please do not follow the instructions in the email and do not contact the scammer.  Although the email uses real graphics stolen from our website and the name “Jason Ebersole” or other CCIU employee names in an attempt to appear legitimate, the sending address is not “cciu.org,” rather it is a Gmail or another type of free email account.

The scammer is attempting to trick random people throughout the US into falling for a “fake check scam” (more information on such scams can be found here and here), using a false CCIU job offer and a false remote interview, usually conducted via Google Hangouts.  Again, neither the job offer nor the interview are legitimate.

Please note that if you did not respond to the email and/or did not engage with the scammer, then you are not at risk and there is no further action necessary, other than reporting the email as phishing to help get the scammer’s account shut down.  Even if you engaged with the scammer, as long as you didn’t wire or otherwise send any money, then you are not at risk.  If you did send money as a result of this scam, please contact your bank immediately to notify them and take appropriate action.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel email webmaster@cciu.org and someone will be happy to contact you personally.
