Are you ready to begin your journey?
The decision to explore a career in health care is the first step on your journey towards a new career. Like any journey, it’s helpful to have a map that can help show you the way to your destination. The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) Practical Nursing Program (PNP) wants to help make your journey towards a career in health care a little easier by giving you a roadmap to your desired destination!
One advantage of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as a way to enter into health care is that it takes less time and costs less than enrolling in a Registered Nurse (RN) program, while still giving you the potential to become an RN in the future. So if you are looking for a faster, more affordable way to break into health care, becoming an LPN might be the perfect opportunity for you!
LPN’s are medical professionals who have completed a program, sometimes in as little as 12 months, culminating in passing the national licensure exam (NCLEX-PN). LPNs are often frontline caregivers in nursing homes, extended and skilled care facilities, rehabilitation centers and community settings.
As a regionally recognized LPN program for over 60 years, we have put together a five-step road map of what your journey towards becoming an LPN will look like from the time you apply to our program until the time you begin your first job as an LPN!
Step 1: Apply to an LPN Program
The first step towards your future as an LPN begins with applying to our program! To apply, visit our application page and select the campus and any relevant full-time or part-time designations that may apply.
Step 2: TEAS Testing
After a candidate's application has been accepted, the next part of the process is to pass the ATI TEAS Test. This is a nationally recognized exam that measures basic academic skills, such as Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Science and English, and helps predict success in a nursing program. We know that testing can be intimidating, but don't worry! We've pulled together a resource library full of resources including test-taking tips, study guides and practice questions to help maximize your success!
Step 3: Complete the Program
A candidate can complete our program in as little as 15-18 months, depending if you choose to be a full-time or part-time student. Students complete courses and attend clinicals over the course of the program to prepare to enter the field. You can find a detailed explanation of our program options based on location and length of the program on our website.
Step 4: Take the NCLEX exam
PNP prepares students to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (NCLEX-PN) upon completion of the program, allowing them a faster entry into the nursing profession and opportunities for future growth and education in the field.
Step 5: Begin Your New Career in Nursing!
After passing the NCLEX, students are ready to get their first job as an LPN! Nearly all PNP graduates seeking employment find job placements in Chester County and the surrounding area within a few months of passing their licensing exam. Your job search is assisted by your clinical rotations, as well as the opportunity to attend two on-site job fairs each year. You can find a detailed explanation of our LPN career pathways on our website.
If you are interested in taking the first step towards becoming an LPN, our Practical Nursing Program would be a great way for you to fast-track a career into the health care field! PNP is now enrolling for August and November 2021 classes!
